“The food was fantastic! It was amazing how the Western River guides transformed the campsites into a kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meals were very well balanced. Dinners were gourmet.”

Why You'll Love Camping in Cataract Canyon
SUNSETS LIKE NOWHERE ELSE ON EARTH
“Golden hour” hues of orange, red, pink and violet echo vibrantly in the same canyon colors in a wide-screen effect more panoramic than most places on earth (we aren’t even mentioning VR)!
MIDDLE OF NOWHERE AND LOVING IT
If you could only see yourself from a satellite’s view... Cataract Canyon in the heart of Canyonlands National Park is one of the most isolated places you could possibly find yourself!
NIGHT SKIES THAT SHOW YOU WHAT FOREVER LOOKS LIKE
When only the light of the Milky Way shines down, you’re given the rare gift of seeing the depth of pools between those stars. Then you look over at your loved ones asleep nearby and suddenly you understand why the light came from millions of light-years away.
RIVERSIDE LUXURY WESTERN RIVER STYLE
“Getting you there” is our job. Getting you back again is the other half. But there’s so much that happens on the adventure in between that is so much more than a bumpy ride. Relax and enjoy the camp comforts, deliciously appointed meals, and a peace of mind that comes from loving and trusting your guides!

Dining on the River
Know Before You Go
These insights from the Western River team are candid considerations for this trip. We believe in being transparent so you can choose the best trip for you and your loved ones.
Physical Demands
The Cataract Canyon expedition is an active outdoor adventure that requires a moderate level of fitness and mobility. You'll be rafting through Class III-V rapids, hiking on uneven terrain, and camping in wilderness conditions. While our guides are there to assist, all participants must be able to climb in and out of rafts, carry their own gear, and navigate camp terrain independently. This trip may not be suitable for those with severe mobility issues or certain medical conditions. Please consult with our team if you have concerns about the physical demands of the trip.

Breakfast
Steaming coffee provides welcome warmth to counter the cool sand between your toes. You might think you're still dreaming when you see plates of steaming flapjacks, fresh fruit and scrambled eggs, but it's the way every morning on the river begins. Western's guides are not only trained river professionals, they're talented campfire cooks as well. And Western always serves fresh food on all river adventures.

Lunch
A wonderful selection of fresh meats and cheeses, delicious breads, along with crisp vegetables and a variety of spreads satisfy hearty lunchtime appetites after a morning in the canyon. Tasty chicken and veggie wraps or perhaps chicken salad pitas may also be part of Western's mid-day buffet. At all times, unlimited quantities of icy lemonade and fresh water are available to quench your thirst.

Dinner
While you enjoy delectable appetizers and relax and at the river's edge, the guides prepare a dinner that is sure to surprise and please. Every night is different, but the menu will likely include grilled chicken breasts, tender steaks, pasta, or fresh fish accompanied by tossed green salad with your choice of dressing, vegetables, and side dishes. Dutch-oven cake and cobblers or other scrumptious desserts deliciously top off the evening meal.
★★★★★ 4.9 OUT OF 2,025 REVIEWS . | 15,000+ ADVENTURERS SINCE 1961
Camping along the Colorado River in the depths of Canyonlands National Park, and Cataract Canyon is one of the most sublime experiences on earth. It must be experienced to understand why that is not an overstatement. There's just something about watching a sunset from the depths, with brilliant red and orange castles, towers and cliffs above you, absorbing the colors of the sun as it drops from the sky. Top that experience off with a night under the stars where the milky way galaxy feels like it's inches from your nose, and surrounding you. Repeat three more times during this expedition, and you can't go home unchanged!
While you experience these transformational events in camp, in your own time and space, you will also enjoy delicious meals shared with new-found friends, and with every need provided by your attentive guides.
Toilet Facilities on the River
The portable toilet system we use in camp (as shown in the video) is NOT available during the day while rafting. During the day your guides will take “pit stops” (also known as “smile breaks”) where boats pull ashore allowing guests to access the river’s edge and… smile... while discreetly relieving liquid waste (#1) directly in the river’s naturally flushing current, according to regulations. This is generally done by wading into the water in a calm location or by finding a more private location at the water’s edge.
While we won't have the toilet system available during a portion of each day, if you need to go #2 during one of our pit stops, we will provide directions to a private location and supplies for a clean and convenient way to collect and dispose of things.
